AVID Program

AVID is a program at Roosevelt that focuses on building a college going culture. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The idea behind AVID is that given support, average students whose families do not have a history of attending college can gain acceptance to, and be successful in, a four year college or university. The AVID program is not a free ride. Rather, AVID students meet and overcome challenges in high school and in life TOGETHER, with the support of AVID faculty and each other. AVID students are enrolled in the AVID elective class, where they have access to tutors twice a week, learn strategies for success in their classes, and attend college campus tours. AVID students have access to a school counselor dedicated exclusively to them, and AVID students are pushed to take rigorous honors and AP courses. If you want to make the most out of high school, and you have the drive and desire to be successful in life, AVID may be the program for you.

“… what AVID shows is that high minority achievement can be more ordinary when schools not only insist on academic rigor but also offer personal support. AVID offers a blueprint for this scaffolding.”
